Job Goal:
To maintain the physical school plant and grounds in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of them may be made at all times.
Reports To: Head Custodian in Charge for day-to-day work situations, Supervisor of Custodians for overall custodial functions and Building Principal.
Qualifications:
Knowledge and/or or ability to obtain and retain knowledge from on the job training, regarding methods, materials, and equipment used and the safety precautions to be taken in performing custodial or janitorial work, including knowledge of the proper use of custodial supplies (synthetic detergents, soaps, scouring powders, waxes, etc.) and of the proper techniques in using them on various kinds of floors, walls, toilet-room equipment, furniture and other building furnishings and equipment.
Knowledge and/or or ability to obtain and retain knowledge from on the job training for of the use, operation and care of custodial equipment (vacuum cleaners, floor machines, floor brushes, sweeping mops, lawn mower, line trimmer etc.)
Knowledge and/or or ability to obtain and retain knowledge from on the job training for the care of the buildings and property (grounds, walks, lawns, shrubbery, etc.)
Skill in the use of hand tools and knowledge of the minor adjustment and repair of furniture and other building equipment and changing light bulbs and working electrical systems (for lighting areas).
Knowledge and/or or ability to obtain and retain knowledge from on the job training for fire and accident prevention in public buildings, including the operation and care of the various kinds of hand extinguishers.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions in English. Bilingual preferred (Spanish or Portuguese)
Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships.
Physical fitness to perform a variety of manual tasks.
Ability to lift over 40 pounds.
Ability to go up and down step ladders as necessary.
Must have neat appearance.
Must be honest, dependable, respectful and operate with integrity.
Ability to pay attention to details.
Physical and mental capabilities to perform above work. Physical strength includes but is not limited to, exerting maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects, ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing and ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable
Performance Responsibilities:
Participate in activities such as sweeping, dusting, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, polishing and making minor repairs and adjustments as required for the care of various kinds of floors, walls, windows, light fixtures, toilets, washbowls, furniture and other building furnishings and equipment.
Service, clean and supply restrooms.
Participate in the activities required for the care and maintenance of the school grounds, including mowing of grass, edging, the sweeping of walks, and the removal of snow and ice.
Gather and empty trash.
Responsible for eliminating fire hazards and preventing accidents.
Takes steps to address safety/security concerns and report as necessary.
Other duties as assigned by the Principal, Head Custodian and/or Custodial Supervisor.
