In accordance with the Teachers’ Salary Scale according to education and experience. 

 

Organizational Relationship or Line of Authority:

Directly responsible to the program Director in all matters pertaining to the building. Jointly responsible to appropriate Director and Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning in areas of instruction and curriculum and the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and Equity for all areas of Special Education. 

 

Statement of Duties:                          

 

General:

  • Responsible for the management, planning, development, and functioning of the School Library Media Program in the High School
  • Participate in the educational process through direct instruction and collaboration with teachers and staff. 
  • Provide technical services associated with the operation and maintenance of a media center, including equipment and print and non-print materials. 
  • Develop an age-appropriate, inclusive, and culturally responsive environment that promotes student collaboration and discourse.
  • Develop and maintain a current, age-appropriate, and culturally responsive collection to reflect curricular changes and to meet the informational, research, education, and recreational needs of users. 
  • Collects and analyzes data to improve instruction; inform library resources; and demonstrates a correlation between the School Library Media Program and student achievement.

Specific:

  • Instruct students and faculty in selecting, evaluating, using and/or producing media to integrate into the curriculum and facilitate the teaching/learning process. 
  • Initiate interaction with students, staff, administration, and the general public for purposes of integrating, promoting, and expanding the School Library Media Program.
  • Design and implement short and long-range plans which allow for a balance among integrated skills instruction, literature appreciation, planning with teachers, and collection management and development. 
  • Assemble materials for faculty use to support curriculum. 
  • Support and promote technological approaches to the teaching/learning process. 
  • Assist and encourage students and faculty with creative use of technology. 
  • Co-teach lessons with High School teachers to support digital literacy and the school’s curriculum goals. 
  • Promote the ethical use of information: copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property. 
  • Coordinate the delivery of a virtual/online course offerings program. 
  • Establish and carry out, in coordination with the Instructional Technology Specialists, procedures for effective and efficient selection, acquisition, cataloging, processing, accessing, and maintenance of materials and equipment. 
  • Solicit input from teachers and students in the selection of materials. 
  • Issue updates on the acquisition of new materials.
  • Supervise circulation of all print/non-print materials. 
  • Coordinate, train, and supervise a student assistant/volunteer program for routine assistance. 
  • Provide opportunities for personal and professional growth for him/herself, as well as the school’s staff and students. 
  • Plan exhibits and programs through collaboration with other Marlborough High School staff and with the staff of the Marlborough Public Library. 
  • Schedule use of media center by classes and groups. 
  • Carry out assigned non-instructional duties. 
  • Function as an active member of the faculty; attends faculty meetings and meetings of appropriate PLC groups. 
  • Participate actively on district and building committees as required or interested. 
  • Adhere to established law, policies, rules, and regulations. 
  • Submit accurate inventories and reports promptly. 
  • Manage expenditures of assigned budget funds based on curriculum and replacement needs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. 
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science or its equivalent is preferred. 
  • Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a Library Media Specialist or other appropriate DESE license for the role.
  • Current experience in a school library media center, including resource-based instruction, flexible scheduling, electronic information sources, and automated circulation systems. 
  • Such alternatives to the above qualification as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
